Flavius Arrianus, Anabasis of Alexander 4.11.7-12.1

But the Macedonians disapproving most of this speech remained silent. Then Kallisthenes spoke...

'You, Anaxarchos, are neither in the presence of nor you advise Kambyses or Xerxes, but to the son of Philip you talk, a descendant of Herakles and Aiakos, whose ancestors came from Argos to Macedonia and governed the Macedonians, not with violence but in law...

Alexander, I demand you remember Hellas, for the sake of which you embarked on this expedition, with the intention to add [i.e. annex] Asia to Hellas. Therefore think, when you return, will you force the Hellenes <allies of Hellenic League>, who are so much attached to freedom, to kneel <before you>, or will you leave them aside and only force this dishonor onto the Macedonians <Alexander's own subjects>;

or will you distinguish in the receiving of honors, so that by the Hellenes and Macedonians you are treated as a man in the way fitted for Hellenes honor, and only by the barbarians in the barbarian way?' ...

And the Macedonians approved his speech.
