Daout Levi, director of the administration of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, manuscript "Notas Historikas sovre la Communidad Judia de Thessaloniki" written in June of 1942, amid the German occupation. (According to the proemium, the report was intended to inform the next generation of Thessalonian Jews. The surviving pages were found in Germany by the Allies. They were returned to the Thessalonian survivors of the holocaust.)

 

Ever since 1912, the renowned year during which Thessaloniki was liberated by the Greek Army, the affection and interest of the Government and the local authorities inspired in the hearts of the Jewish element sentiments of trust and devotion. And thus the Jews live in peace and quiet...
